is imperative for progress. When a student progresses, they feel
confident and excited. Lack of practice causes frustration and
dissatisfaction with the lesson process. When a student and family makes
the commitment to lessons, they are also committing to making a best
effort to practice consistently. Parents, please help
students establish a consistent routine. One simple way to get them
playing is to ask students to play a certain piece throughout the week.
Please encourage them in their good effort!
Learning HOW to practice effectively is a skill
students have to be taught. During lessons we talk about effective
practice, we demonstrate it during lessons, and talk about what they
should do at home.
How much time should my student be practicing?
student must make a commitment to practice at least five days a week.
Students will be asked to sign a contract stating they will make an
honest effort to practice this amount. Please have students get their
assignment books out at the beginning of each practice!
For young students, it is less a certain amount of time as quality repetitions, every day. If
time limits help, I would suggest 15 minutes/day for the first year of
study, and 20/minutes per day for the second year. By the third year,
students should be up to 30 minutes/day. If a student is struggling to
fill in their time, encourage them to go back and play a favorite song
from the past years.
students progress, their time at the piano will naturally need to be
longer, as they will have longer songs and more detailed things to
practice. If students have a shorter load of songs, encourage them to
play their lesson pieces, then dig out some favorite songs from years
past and see if they can play them.
What does my tuition fee cover?
will be prepared to teach each student 30 lessons. Tuition includes
lesson time, teacher preparation, studio classes, materials used in the
studio, and various other overhead costs (insurance, professional
association fees, continuing education, piano maintenance, etc.).
Do I need a piano at my house?
A quality piano or keyboard is imperative to student progress. Acoustic
pianos must be tuned yearly. If an electronic instrument is wanted, it
must have the following: (1) Full keyboard of 88 keys, (2) weighted
keys, (3) a stand and bench, (4) sostenuto pedal, (5) touch-sensitive
keys. Please feel free to ask me for keyboard model suggestions before you purchase anything to see if it meets the requirements.
Please do not bring your student if he/she is sick. If my children are
sick then we will make up the lesson either on a different day
throughout the week, or a week following Make-Up Week.
Please do not bring your child to their lesson if they have
- Had fever in the past 24 hours
- Had diarrhea or vomiting in the past 24 hours
- Missed school that day because they were sick
- Coughing and sneezing a lot (it is hard to make sure those keys get completely sanitized!)
will be handled on a case-by-case basis. (Ex: death in the family,
sudden and severe illness requiring hospitalization, etc)
Tuition is due the first lesson of the month. If payment is not received after the second week of the month, a $15/student late fee will be added. Also, if a check is returned, a $30 fee will be charged.
you use bank pay, you are still responsible for the payment arriving on
time, so please schedule the check early enough so it arrives by the
second week. My suggestion is to schedule it for the last week of the
previous month (Ex: For March’s tuition, schedule it for the last week
|45 minute lessons ||$100/month for 9 months (September-May)|
|60 minute lessons||$133/month for 9 months (September-May)|
There has been no increase in hourly rate this year, but as the payment
is broken into 9 payments rather than 10 as it was last year, it has
caused a slight increase in the per month tuition. My hourly rate is
still $40/hour, as it was last year.
Possible Additional Costs:
will periodically need new books or materials. I can either purchase
them and will ask to be reimbursed later, or can send you the link and
you can purchase them from online.
CONTESTS AND MASTERCLASSES:
Contests, masterclasses, or other extra events outside the piano studio
are not covered by tuition. These are never required events, and the
costs will be presented at that time. Typically, Masterclasses by the
local music teacher’s group cost $5-$10. Music Progressions is around
Because specific times are set aside for specific students, a student
who does not attend a lesson will simply miss the benefit of that
lesson. I will then use that time to plan for the student’s progress,
locate materials, etc. Please be assured that your tuition pays for far
more than the time spent with your child. There are no
refunds, discounts or makeups given unless I am unable to teach the
promised number of lessons. If I need to cancel due to sickness in my
household, I will take the amount off of next month’s tuition.
Make-up week is an added week at the end of the semester, where if your
child has missed a lesson they can make up one lesson during this week
at their regularly scheduled time.
There will be one studio class where students can get together and
practice performing (and listening!) before their big event. In the past
we have also been able to play some group games, and do some folk
dancing. It’s one of my favorite studio activities of the year!
